“Let us be grateful to people who make us happy, they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.” Marcel Proust
Each night before sleep, despite how tired I may be feeling, I take a little time to sit and reflect on the day. What went well? Any special moments? What I am grateful for? This daily practice has been so helpful and is one that is now a healthy habit in my life that I try to maintain.
“Every time you engage in gratitude, your brain is getting practice at turning its attention to things that create pleasant emotional states. The more practice you get – the easier it becomes to use that in other situations” Dr. Julie Smith. A Gratitude Journal is a great way to capture these reflective thoughts and moments. Sitting down with pen and paper to write out even just 3 things, is a conscious choice to remind ourselves of what we appreciate and redirect our focus. It is such a simple yet powerful tool. Dr. Daniel Amen (3:33) also talks about this in his practice and through this daily brain exercise we develop our mental muscle.
I feel blessed to have friends in my life who have taught me the importance of gratitude. Not only is it valuable to reflect on this for yourself but equally to share that same gratitude with those individuals who may have made your day a little brighter. It has been the support of friends who have helped to stabilise and support me through rocky times. This in itself highlights the importance of friendship and being connected with others.
Who are you grateful for in your life? Tell them. Today.
A gratitude journal or notebook is a lovely gift idea, so why not start them off and write to them to say thank you!
With love and in kindness.
